DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDIES, Sundays @ 5:00 pm

Jesus in the Gospels currently meets Sunday evenings from 5-6:30 pm through December 2023. Disciple Fast Track: Old Testament will begin September 10th led by Associate Pastor Seyun Hwang. Disciple 1 will begin in January 2023 led by Norm Kligerman.

Long-term Disciple Bible Study classes are an excellent way to learn more about the Bible and how to apply God’s Word to your daily lives. Disciple classes include daily readings of scripture and commentaries from various Christian authors. The class includes a video and discussion of the daily readings. The small group setting enables strong Christian relationships to be built between class members.

Studies include:

  • Disciple 2 – focuses on Genesis, Exodus, Luke and the book of Acts.
  • Disciple 3 – looks at the Prophets of the Old Testament and the letters of the Apostle Paul.
  • Disciple 4 – studies various writings in the Old Testament, the Gospel of John and the book of Revelation.

Hands of Hope, Sundays at 10:00 am

Hands of Hope is a Sunday morning Christian education class that meets on the lower level of Genesis in room 105. All adults are invited to join us! Discussions are led by Jeff Cooper, handsofhope@genesis-umc.org.

Beginning July 30: “Get Out of Your Head” by Jennie Allen

“Are your thoughts holding you captive? Jennie Allen knows what it’s like to swirl in a spiral of destructive thoughts, such as I’ll never be good enough. Other people have better lives than I do. God couldn’t really love me. But Jennie also knows we don’t have to stay stuck in toxic thinking patterns. As she discovered, God built a way for us to escape that downward spiral. Freedom comes when we refuse to be victims to our thoughts and realize we have already been equipped with power from God to fight and win the war for our minds.

In “Get Out of Your Head, Jennie takes groups on a study in Philippians, inspiring and equipping us to transform our emotions, our outlook, and even our circumstances by taking control of our thoughts. When we submit our minds to Christ, the promises and goodness of God flood our lives in remarkable ways. It starts in your head. And from there, the possibilities are endless.”

LIFT, Tuesdays @ 10:00 am – Noon

LIFT (Ladies in Faith Together) is a ladies’ Bible study that meets Tuesdays at 10:00 am at Genesis in room 105. All ladies are invited. For more information, contact Linda Binkley or Becci Monge, lift@genesis-umc.org.

New Study begins September 5 with a Social Event: Bad Girls of the Bible

Women everywhere marvel at those “good girls” in Scripture–Sarah, Mary, Esther–but on most days, that’s not who they see when they look in the mirror. Most women (if they’re honest) see the selfishness of Sapphira or the deception of Delilah. They catch of glimpse of Jezebel’s take-charge pride or Eve’s disastrous disobedience. Like Bathsheba, Herodias, and the rest, today’s modern woman is surrounded by temptations, exhausted by the demands of daily living, and burdened by her own desires.

So what’s a good girl to do? Learn from their lives, says beloved Bible study teacher and speaker Liz Curtis Higgs, and choose a better path. Whether they were “Bad to the Bone,” “Bad for a Season, but Not Forever” or only “Bad for a Moment,” these infamous sisters show women how not to handle the challenges of life.
With her trademark humor and encouragement, Higgs combines a contemporary retelling of the stories of these “other women” in Scripture with a solid, verse-by-verse study to teach us how to avoid their tragic mistakes and joyfully embrace grace.

Let Linda Binkley or Becci Monge know if you are interested in attending these studies, if you need a book, or if you need childcare. Linda Binkly & Becci Monge, lift@genesis-umc.org.

To participate in these discussions, email Anthony Caronna, seekers@genesis-umc.org.

Beginning August 27: The Prodigal God by Timothy Keller

The Prodigal God by Timothy Keller

Discover the amazing depths of God’s extravagant love. In this Bible study, pastor and bestselling author Timothy Keller uses one of Jesus’ best-loved parables – the Prodigal Son – to illustrate the depth of God’s love and how his grace extends into some very unexpected places.

Taking you beyond the traditional focus on the wayward younger son, Keller helps you glean insight from each of the characters in Jesus’ parable: the irreligious younger son, the moralistic elder son, and the Father who lavishes his love on both.

Whether you’re a devout believer or a skeptic, The Prodigal God will challenge you to see Christianity in a whole new way.

Verse by Verse, Sundays at 10:00 am

Current Study: The Gospel of Matthew

Scripture study led by Betsy Jonas, versebyverse@genesis-umc.org.
