Genesis UMC congregants have enabled the Dorcas Food Pantry to remain open on Saturdays since 2011. Volunteers serve on Saturdays to enable those clients who cannot make it to the food pantry during the week to do their shopping on Saturdays. Without Genesis, the pantry would not be able to operate on Saturdays and families in our community would go hungry.
We need YOU! Genesis is low on volunteers. We need to replenish our volunteer base for this local mission.
About Dorcas Ministries
Dorcas Ministries was formed by a small group of Christians in 1968, brought together by Margaret Keller and with the backing from local churches. Their purpose was to address a common concern: how to best serve our neighbors in need. Dorcas Ministries has always and continues to strive to find solutions to the increasing and different needs of the community, hoping to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors.
In 2008, Dorcas purchased Dorcas Plaza off of High House Road, with a goal of creating a non-profit center in Cary to serve the needs of western Wake County. They moved into the space in 2011 and were able to expand the Thrift Shop and services offered, including adding a food pantry.
Genesis member Jean McCullough started working at the food pantry and soon organized a Saturday team from Genesis UMC for cleaning and organizing. They started having clients come in. The Genesis team was the only Saturday team until around July 2019 when the Saturday hours were expanded. Now other churches participate with Genesis UMC to cover the Saturday hours at the pantry.
