Hats for Duke / Port Pillows for Rex

Hats for Duke / Port Pillows for Rex

Genesis’ Hats for Duke mission cuts and sews hats for Duke and port pillows for Rex hospitals for their patients undergoing Chemotherapy.

In March the representative for the Duke Hospital Cancer Patient Support Program said that, during the current pandemic, we could not deliver the hats we had ready. We were therefore inactive for two months – that is – all except for our wonderful senior home sewer Charline Emens,  who immediately requested a supply of materials and to date has made 67 port pillows and more than 70 hats. Charline loves sewing and has sourced and donated filling and Velcro , etc. in support of our mission.

After a successful response to a request in May, for volunteers to cut hat patterns, fabric was safely dropped off and later collected from front porches. Thank you to all who participated and a special shout out to the very first volunteers; Conner and Walker McDonald, who carefully cut out Beanies, much needed for young cancer patients at Duke Hospital.

Ever hopeful that we can soon drop off the hats, we NEED SEWERS to sew the stockpile of over 60 patterns already cut out, with more to follow as we continue to source sale price Jersey Knit fabric. If you can help with sewing and cutting please contact me at:
