Local Missions

Local Missions

Genesis UMC partners with several Cary based organizations to serve our local community.

Kingswood Elementary School, our C4C partner

Bishop Hope Ward began the Congregations for Children initiative to join the local church to schools in their community that have needs the church could meet.  Genesis chose to partner with Kingswood Elementary school, a downtown Cary STEM magnet school.  We currently help each week by packing fresh produce for their Feeding Friends program, as well as collecting and delivering food items they need weekly to pack weekend food for over 30 families in their school.  We also donate grocery store gift cards to be given to these identified families to help with food purchases during the winter and summer breaks.

Kingswood Elementary School

We have adults serving as teacher helpers in the classrooms on a weekly basis and our youth ministry has a weekly tutoring session for children in grades 3rd-5th that have been identified by their teachers as needing a little extra help.  We also provide 2 special lunches for the staff each year and we have a birthday “fairy” that not only puts treats in the staff boxes that are celebrating but also puts treats in the teacher’s lounge for all to enjoy.

Dorcas Ministries

The Baking Shelf at the Dorcas food pantry

The mission of Dorcas Ministries is to provide residents in the Cary, Morrisville and New Hill areas emergency assistance for their essential human needs. This includes:

  • Shelter
  • Clothing
  • Food
  • Fuel
  • Transportation
  • Medical Care

This care is enhanced with childcare, and educational assistance scholarships are available.

Genesis UMC volunteers run the Dorcas Food Pantry every Saturday.  Help feed our community by signing up to join the food pantry team or:

  • Stock the Genesis baking shelf
  • Shuttle food to Dorcas

Servants are also needed at The Dorcas Shop.

We have a team of volunteers who partner with Dorcas Ministries to serve those who are in need of home repairs in the Cary area. Dorcas staff will refer someone to our Partners In Christ Outreach (PICO) volunteer coordinator who will go meet with the people, evaluate the needed repairs, plan for time and cost, and then will reach out to the PICO group to set up dates and times to get the work completed.

Methodist Build

Roofing a new home in the Raleigh area

Genesis has joined with the Fairway and Capital Districts of the Eastern North Carolina UMC conference to partner with Habitat for Humanity Wake County to build a house in east Raleigh. Genesis joins forces with eight other Methodist Churches to help provide a family with a place they can proudly call home. No experience is required, only a desire to live out our core values of loving God, loving neighbors and serving others. Who knows, you may even learn a new skill!

Anyone 16 years or older can join in the fun. Projects are usually scheduled for the fall.

Our sewing ministry cuts and sews hats for Duke and port pillows for Rex hospitals for their patients undergoing Chemotherapy. Volunteers meet at Genesis several times a year in the evening to cut out pattern pieces. Sewing angels pick up the cut pieces and sew the items at home. The Carying Place

We are beginning a new mission in the Cary area by partnering with The Carying Place.  This year we will be serving on our Great Day of Service at the homes that the Carying Place uses as short term housing for their families.  We will be doing yard maintenance for them that day.  We are looking for ways to partner with The Carying Place as we see their mission of helping care for the homeless as something we want to be involved with!
