Dr. Warren Smith, a theology professor from Duke Divinity school, spoke to the Genesis congregation during the Christian Education hour in January to answer some very important questions about our beliefs and where they come from. He addressed questions such as:
-What do we mean when we say that Scripture is inspired by God?
-Who wrote the Church’s creeds?
-How can we claim to be monotheists and yet believe in the Trinity?
-Why do we say that Jesus is fully human and fully divine? How can that be so?
These are the BIG questions because they go to the heart of the gospel we proclaim. They are the teachings of the Church that we confess at our baptism. Because they are central to our own convictions, they define the difference between Christians, Jews, and Muslims. These doctrines are also central to the difference between mainline Christian groups, such Methodists, Baptists, Catholics, Episcopalians, and Presbyterians, and other groups that have very different views of Jesus, such as Jehovah’s Witness and the Church of Latter Day Saints.
